KELOLAND: Living the GreatLIFE

Living the GreatLIFE
January 20, 2016, 10:15 PM by Sammi Bjelland

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Great Life is a pretty well-known name around Sioux Falls now, but it hasn’t always been that way. In fact, the fitness and lifestyle company has only been open a few years.

“A little over two years ago we started with no members. After a year we had about 4,400 memberships,” said Hill.

Most memberships include two people. Now Great Life boasts nearly 11,000 memberships, with 24,000 people.

“It has been an explosion. It has been beyond what we expected. And Great Life isn’t what we started out to do actually,” said Hill.

Great Life President, Donn Hill, says the idea grew over time from something he and the other co-owners saw in Kansas.

The concept was to put fitness centers on golf courses, and sell joint memberships.

“We started with a fitness center at Bakker Crossing. Then we made a deal with EMBE downtown to put a fitness center in there. But really what we’ve done different is make this more about fitness,” said Hill.

Great Life currently has 13 fitness centers in and around Sioux Falls. Only a few of them are on golf courses.

The facility at Woodlake in western Sioux Falls is so popular, you’ll find a full house in the middle of a workday afternoon.

“The parking lots are full. People are parking on the streets. We started a shuttle from Empire Bowl to this facility,” said Hill.

Speaking of bowling, Great Life has recently added free bowling at select locations to its membership perks.

Just this month, Great Life also announced a partnership with SkyZone in Sioux Falls, so members can now get a reduced rate at the trampoline park.

“Our mission is to enrich the lives of families and individuals through golf, fitness and healthy lifestyles. And so we went beyond just golf and fitness,” said Hill.

Not only are these partnerships beneficial to Great Life, they’re also helping out other local businesses here in Sioux Falls.

“With 24,000 members you can imagine the marketing possibility for another business if they get involved with us. But also, because we’re bringing free bowling to places, all of a sudden the bowling alleys are full,” said Hill.

With any added benefits, also comes an added cost. At the beginning of this year, Great Life increased some of its membership cost by $10; something Hill says makes sense with the growth of the business.

“We want to make this a fun experience for all of our members and build loyalty. We think we’re doing that by hiring good people. Having everybody have a smile on their face, and providing quality things you could never get at this price,” said Hill.

A price many people seem more than willing to pay.

Hill won’t say what exactly, but Great Life is looking to add more partnerships with other local businesses that focus on bringing families together.

What you should know about Hot Yoga – Part 3

Conversations with Elizabeth Venrick, Instructor

Hot Yoga is a vigorous form of yoga performed in a studio with higher than average temperatures – up to 105° – with added humidity, depending on which class format is chosen.

In this series of blog posts, GreatLIFE Hot Yoga instructor Elizabeth Venrick provides answers to some of the most common questions.

I’m ready to try Hot Yoga, but I’m not sure if it’s right for me?

One of the great things about yoga of any sort is that it can be adapted for any fitness level. Although it is often practiced in a group setting, yoga is very personal. It’s about knowing your own body and your own limits – and honoring both.

The following are a few questions about the class itself that I hear often.

Is there an age requirement?

Yoga can be practiced at any age, but our GreatLIFE studio requires hot yogis to be at least 15 years old.

Can I do hot yoga if I’m pregnant?

Practicing hot yoga during pregnancy is not recommended, although if you’re experienced, you can attend class at your own risk and modify poses on your own. Not all of our instructors are certified for pre-natal yoga. We suggest checking out something a little gentler during this exciting time in your life such as a basic flow or yin class.

Can I do hot yoga if I’m not very flexible and I can’t do all the poses?

At GreatLIFE yoga, we don’t practice to be perfect. We practice to be wiser on and off the mat, to be better humans, better employees, better athletes, better mothers, fathers, children and spouses. We practice to be happier and more loving.

Yoga may not be easy and you may not be flexible, but there is a class that’s right for everyone. Some poses may be harder than others and some days you’ll be off, but it’s important to honor where you are and keep coming back.

During “those days,” don’t push it. Find comfort with the help of your breath through those less-than-comfortable poses. There’s never a need to be overaggressive and force a posture.

What do I wear to hot yoga class?

The important thing is to be comfortable. Choose clothes that breathe and wick the sweat away from your body, with no more than two layers. For women, we recommend shorts or leggings and a tank top/sports bra. For men we recommend shorts – shirts are optional. Remember GreatLIFE yoga studios are all a #nojudgementzone and a safe place. Don’t be afraid to show some skin if that’s how you’re comfortable. Due to the high temperatures and humidity you will perspire, beginning very early in the session so wear clothes that allow your body to move and breathe. Check out the GreatLIFE boutique for hot yoga options.

What if I pass out?

Remind yourself that yoga is primarily a breathing exercise. Don’t get worked up about the temperature, but focus instead on the practice itself. Drink lots of water in the days and hours leading up to your class. Listen intently to the instructor and don’t worry about what the person next to you is doing. Long, slow and deep breaths – you’ve got this.

Smiling also helps.

We ask that during class if you are feeling faint or nauseous, simple lie down on your back. Try to avoid leaving the hot yoga room as jumping from the heated studio to the room-temperature hallway is a shock to your system. And remember, it’s all about the breath.

Look for more questions and answers about GreatLIFE Hot Yoga in part 4 of this series – coming soon.

SIOUX FALLS, SD – If you drive around Sioux Falls, you can’t help but notice the expansion of GreatLIFE. The fitness centers seem to be popping up everywhere and the number of area golf courses affiliated with the company is also rising.
77-year-old Chuck Davis has been working out at Woodlake Athletic Club since 1983. He can’t believe how much GreatLIFE has transformed the place in just a year’s time.
“To take a look out here and see who is out here, it’s something I didn’t see for 25 or 30 years; it’s just amazing,” Davis said.
It’s about to get even bigger. Area Burger King franchise owner, Tom Walsh Senior, who brought GreatLIFE to Sioux Falls, is putting $7 million into Woodlake.
Great progress has also been made in the 50,000 square foot addition to Woodlake. It’s expected to open May first.
While one big addition may seem more than enough, it’s not for Walsh, who’s moving at a record pace to expand GreatLIFE’s footprint.
This new fitness club just opened on West 26th Street in Marion Road. Two more will open within a month on East 26th Street and East 10th Street. And that’s not all.
“We’ve got a 16,000 square foot brand new Willow Run club house with 6,000 square feet of fitness plus a pool and Jacuzzi out there,” Walsh said.
GreatLIFE will have 14 fitness centers and 20 affiliated golf courses by the end of the year. It now has 11,000 members, but Walsh hopes to double that by the end of the year.
“It’s impacting the lives of these kids and families and couples way beyond anything we ever dreamed of. And for a lot of us, it’s become a mission,” Walsh said.
That mission, ironically enough, for the man who made his fortune in fast food, is to help people live a healthy lifestyle.
“Okay don’t have French fries. Hold the mayonnaise. Have a salad with the chicken,” Walsh said.
“You still want people to eat at Burger King, don’t you?” Angela Kennecke asked.
“Oh absolutely,” Walsh said.
“Ok, just checking,” Angela Kennecke said.
“Yes, flame broiled–have it your way,” Walsh said.
Walsh plans not only to continue expansion in the Sioux Falls area, but also take GreatLIFE nationwide.
“I’m a little driven when I see things that can make a difference in people’s lives,” Walsh said.
Walsh also plans to add two more fitness clubs on the northwest part of the city.
One would be located in a new strip mall near PREMIER Bankcard on North Louise Avenue. The strip mall would include a GreatLIFE fitness club, a Year Round Brown tanning salon, and a coffee shop and juice bar.
The other fitness center would be located in a building by Citibank on East 60th Street North.
